New American Project
An Interactive Video Experience
New American Youth Health Resource (NAPYHR) is an interactive video experience and website resource designed for first generation immigrant youth, ‘New American’, for the purpose of educating them on sexual health and HIV/AIDS information. My role was to take Dr. Caroline King’ori’s vision who served as executive producer and principal investigator, and transform it into a 3-part interactive story script. During production, I directed 2 of three acts and was supervising the video editing process. Post publishing the project, I facilitated focus groups with our target audience. The interactive video experience and website have since won numerous awards including the 2023 W3 Awards Winner for Video Features – Best Use of Interactive Video (Video Category) and 2022 Silver Award, General Health and Fitness Category, Davey Awards respectively.
Gamification of Vaccination Information
An Interactive Video Experience
The culmination of my graduate experience as part of the MFA program at the Ohio University was the production of an interactive video experience using the interactive video software Stornoway.io. The project was based on in depth interviews with members of the Athens, Ohio community including healthcare providers. The intention was to present vaccine information in a gamified choose your own adventure interactive video experience without the contention of the COVID-19 vaccine. For this project, I was the producer, assisted by Lesyk Yakymchuk who handled the cinematography.
Centauri
An Interactive Video Experience
In this innovative project, I worked with Ohio University College of Business’ Robert D. Walter Center for Strategic Leadership, GRID Lab, and Scripps College MFA in Communication Media Arts. My role was to take the client’s vision and translate that into a narrative for screen. Through the narrative design I co-developed, the GRID Lab team designed an online role-playing leadership and team simulation, and set up common approaches for new teams. This project was used as part of a pedagogical approach in leadership development.
TV’s New Golden Age
A podcast series
What happens when you put together two television buffs to talk about the evolution of TV? In 2021, renowned innovator and Professor Eric R. Williams produced podcast series TV’s New Golden Age as part of Audible Original series. My role in the project involved conducting in-depth research on featured television shows, emerging trends in streaming, and comparing audience consumption habits in the U.S. with those in the developing world. This research provided critical insights into how global audiences engage with the rapidly changing landscape of television.
Family Media
Producing and Broadcasting
As a radio and TV producer at TBN Family Media, I played a key role in designing a weekday show for both platforms. My responsibilities included news analysis, producing infotainment segments, conducting interviews, and managing the broadcast of a magazine-style program. This high-pressure environment honed my skills in content development, live production, and interview techniques, while also enhancing my ability to adapt and innovate based on audience feedback and analysis.
Film and Television
TV series and Short Films
While working as a stage manager, I was brought on by Joyce Musoke, producer at Cheese Pictures, for the comedy TV series One In A Million. As assistant art director, I gained firsthand experience in the complexities of television production, from production management and set design to artist direction and directing. These skills proved essential as I moved on to work on projects like the TV series Majaribu, the short film Binary, and later took on roles as a TV producer and broadcaster.
Theater Experience
Stage Production
This is where my creative journey truly took root. It all began when a childhood friend attended career day at their high school, where one of the speakers was an actor and director. My friend passed along his contact information to me, and within a week, I was auditioning at the Phoenix Players Theater. This marked the start of a five-year adventure in stage production management. Under the guidance of seasoned professionals, I gained invaluable, hands-on experience in all aspects of theater production, from monologues to musicals. I had the opportunity to work on original scripts like Minister Karibu by the esteemed James Okumu, as well as classic adaptations such as Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and Reginald Rose’s 12 Angry Men. This formative period laid the groundwork for my later ventures in film, television, and radio.
